August 9, 2010

U.S.-flag Great Lakes freighters carried 10.4 million net tons of cargo in June, said the Lake Carriers’ Association. This was an increase of 5 per cent compared to May and an increase of 39 per cent compared to a year ago.

This June’s total was, however, down 3.7 per cent from the month’s five-year average.

Iron ore cargoes in June essentially doubled the volume of a year ago. Coal loadings were up 5.3 per cent, while limestone cargoes increased 50 per cent.

Year-to-date U.S.-flag cargoes stand at 32.9 million net tons, an increase of 57.5 per cent compared to a year ago, but 10.2 per cent behind the five-year average for the first half of the year. Iron ore cargoes are up 138 per cent. Coal is marginally ahead of a year ago. Limestone cargoes are up 38 per cent.
