CSL, Ecospec forge alliance to reduce emissions

Award-winning emission-abatement technology
to be installed on Great Lakes vessel

June 21, 2010

Canada Steamship Lines has signed a letter of intent with Singapore-based Ecospec Marine Technology to develop and install CSNOx technology within the CSL fleet.

CSL said the partnership is part of the shipping line’s continuing effort to “advance its industry-leading position in environmental stewardship.”

CSL president Gerry Carter made the announcement at Green Marine’s Green Tech for Shipping conference held recently in Montreal.

CSL and Ecospec plan to install the CSNOx system on one of the carrier’s Great Lakes vessels later this year in order to validate and obtain certification of the performance and efficiency of the system in a freshwater environment. The CSL installation is the world’s first CSNOx freshwater environment project.

CSNOx is described as the world’s first three-in-one emission-abatement system, “a commercially viable solution that can effectively reduce harmful pollutants such as sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and carbon dioxide from emissions of large ocean trading vessels. All three gases are removed in one process and in a single system, without using harmful chemicals.”

A press release from CSL and Ecospec said CSNOx is the only marine exhaust gas abatement process that is capable of offsetting and net reduction in CO2 emission trails. “This mainly sets it apart from existing conventional scrubbers that increase CO2 emissions due to chemical reactions in the scrubbing process, or primarily due to the fact that they do not at all have the capability to offset CO2 emissions by the additional energy used,” the release said.

CSL and Ecospec said they are optimistic the system could be the “environmental emission reduction breakthrough that the marine industry has been searching for, and will become the new standard for emission reductions.”

Ecospec researches and develops solutions for environmental issues in the marine and onshore industries.

CSNOx won the Technology of the Year global award at the Green Ship Technology Conference 2010 in Copenhagen in March and the Environment Protection Award at the Seatrade Asia Awards 2009 last June.
