Montreal Gateway Terminals receives
environmental certification

October 5, 2009

Montreal Gateway Terminals Partnership’s two common container terminal facilities in the Port of Montreal have been awarded ISO 14001:2004 environmental certification for the company’s Environmental Management System.

“This environmental certification exemplifies Montreal Gateway Terminals’ ongoing commitment to the highest standards of environmental awareness and dedication in order to comply with and/or exceed the expectations of our customers and the community at large,” MGT said in a release.

Registrars from BSI Management Systems, one of Canada’s foremost ISO certification firms, recently audited MGT operations and recommended them for certification.

The ISO 14001 environmental management standard was introduced in 1996 and has subsequently provided a common structure for managing environmental-related developments including regulatory compliance and constant improvement in the areas of environmental performance and due diligence. MGT has continued to maintain an Environmental Management System over the years, meeting the requirements of ISO 14001:2004.

“Reaching this important milestone is primarily due to the ongoing commitment and teamwork of our entire organization,” said Kevin Doherty, CEO of Montreal Gateway Terminals. “The maintenance departments of both terminals provide accurate information as a part of the ongoing development and expansion of the ISO 14001:2004 project, and the operations department ensures our terminals’ activities remain compliant.

“The ISO 14001:2004 project has, from Day 1, had the backing and support of Montreal Gateway Terminals’ executive management and will effectively continue to reach objectives and targets.”

“Montreal Gateway Terminals has always been an innovator and a leader on the environmental front, as evidenced in particular by its participation in Green Marine,” said Sylvie Vachon, president and CEO of the Montreal Port Authority. “Its ISO 14001 certification demonstrates its willingness to establish permanent systems to measure its environmental performance within its continuous improvement process. MGT is a true source of inspiration to the marine industry, and the Montreal Port Authority is proud to partner with such an environmentally responsible enterprise.”

MGT’s general manager of loss prevention/environmental protection and its environmental specialist supervise the evolution of the project.
